Joanne Thompson
ARTIST'S STATEMENTJoanne graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a 1st class Hons Degree. From there she went on to complete an MA in Jewellery at the Royal College of Art in London. Following this a Setting Up Award from the Crafts Council enabled Joanne's Studio to begin from which she creates batch production ranges alongside one-off pieces.Using mainly silver and oxidized silver Joanne uses unit construction methods such as chain mail and hinging, assembling pieces into necklaces, bracelets and rings, giving forms which are three dimensional, flexible, tactile and durable. Movement is an important element in the wearing of these pieces and they are very pleasing to the touch and against the body. It is essential that the jewellery is comfortable and easy to wear. Each piece is hand-crafted at the bench, giving each piece a certain individuality. Since graduating from the RCA in 1995 Joanne has exhibited nationally and internationally. Exhibitions include 'Subjects 96', the Fibula Gallery, Norway; 'New Faces', Victoria and Albert Museum, London; 'Contemporary Decorative Arts', Sothebys, London; Solo Show, Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh; 'Contemporary British Jewellery', Seattle, USA; '50 pieces of Gold', CAA, London. Joanne is also a regular exhibitor at the Chelsea Crafts Fair, London and Dazzle exhibitions, nation-wide. Joanne was commissioned two years running in 96 and 97 by De Beers to create jewellery for the prize-winner at Diamond Day, Ascot. She also attended a reception given by the Queen at Buckingham Palace for 'Young Achievers' in 98.
